The Little Sisters and Big Daddies play an even bigger role in BioShock 2, which gives the player a chance to re-experience Rapture from both of their perspectives. Perhaps it’s just because I was a newly minted dad when the game first launched, but I felt a connection to these kids that I’ve rarely felt with characters in other games. Saving them results in a small penalty in your ability to evolve your own character, but how anyone could possibly choose to murder these terrified and helpless girls is beyond me. These little girls – protected by lumbering deep sea suit-wearing Big Daddies, the game’s de facto mini-bosses – can either be harvested for the ADAM they carry or saved. The most haunting of these is the plight of the Little Sisters we encounter throughout the game little girls experimented upon and used to generate a material called ADAM that Rapture’s citizens employ to alter their DNA. This admittedly heavy philosophical slant could have become overpowering had not Levine balanced his big thoughts with moments of authentic human emotion. We see in the people of Rapture an extreme example of what could happen if we were to unburden ourselves of our morality and human values to pursue anything and everything that strikes our fancy. It is a clear criticism of objectivism specifically the notion that selfishness is a virtue to be cultivated. Its denizens have succumbed to their own desires and greed to be more powerful and more beautiful and have used their scientific discoveries to transform themselves into half-human monsters who prey on each other.
